Knee Pain

Understanding Knee Pain

The knee functions like a hinge, allowing primarily bending and straightening movements. Muscles connect to the knee at certain spots, and these connections determine how the muscle works.

The link between muscle and bone is known as a tendon. Using a muscle too much can lead to a common overuse injury referred to as tendinitis.

The iliotibial band (ITB) is part of the gluteus muscle and the tensor fascia latae muscle. These muscles narrow down the thigh's outer side and merge into a tough tissue (ITB) that connects to the knee's outer part.

When the iliotibial band gets irritated at its attachment point on the knee's outer side (lateral epicondyle), it's known as iliotibial band friction syndrome. This condition can cause pain while sitting and ongoing discomfort during activity.
