What is a Disc Bulge:

A disc bulge is when the tough exterior of a spinal disc weakens and stretches, allowing its gel-like center to extend outward in a 360-degree bulge. This condition, often synonymous with disc degeneration, may cause pain either directly from the disc itself or by pressing on nearby nerve-containing structures.

What is a Herniated Disc:

A herniated disc arises from traumatic forces pushing the disc's gel-like center through its tough outer layer. This displacement leads to tearing of the cartilage, which can cause pain and potentially compress critical areas such as the spinal cord or nerves. Common causes include car accidents, sports injuries, and falls.

Symptoms of Disc Bulge and Herniated Disc:

Symptoms mainly stem from the irritation of spinal nerves exiting through small openings called foramen. Discs located near these nerve pathways can bulge and press on the nerves, causing a range of symptoms from discomfort to severe impairment.

  • Lumbar Spine Disc Bulge Symptoms: In the lower back, a disc bulge can lead to pain or sensations like numbness, tingling, burning, sharp pain, or weakness in the legs or feet. Specifically, sharp leg pain is often identified as Sciatica. ( link to sciatic pain here)

  • Cervical Spine Disc Bulge Symptoms: In the neck, a disc bulge may cause neck pain or, in more severe cases, symptoms like numbness, tingling, burning, sharp pain, or weakness in the arms or hands.

Thoracic Disc Herniation:

Thoracic disc herniations are less common due to the thoracic spine's limited movement, restricted by the ribcage. They can still lead to significant pain and dysfunction. Surgical access to the thoracic disc is complex and may require rib removal, posing risks of further complications. Conservative treatments like chiropractic are recommended as first-line options before considering more invasive methods like injections or surgery.

Low Back Issues: Lumbar Spine Disc Problems

When you have a disc bulge in your lower back, it might lead to pain in the area, or feelings of numbness, tingling, a burning sensation, sharp pain, or weakness in your legs and feet. A common type of sharp leg pain caused by this issue is called Sciatica.

Neck Issues: Cervical Spine Disc Problems

If the disc bulge is in your neck, it can cause neck pain. In more serious cases, you might experience numbness, tingling, a burning sensation, sharp pain, or weakness in your arms and hands.

Disc Bulge / Herniated Disc of the Low Back: Lumbar Spine Disc Bulge

A disc problem in your lower back can lead to pain there, or you might feel numb, tingly, have a burning feeling, sharp pains, or feel weak in your legs and feet. A sharp leg pain is often called Sciatica.
